Met One

HIGH PERFORMANCE WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the program called "Met One"?
METs (short for “metabolic equivalents”) are a way of measuring energy expenditure; one MET is the equivalent of the energy it takes to maintain metabolic processes at rest. Exercise that requires, say, three METs takes three times that resting energy. A recent study by Myers et al in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM 2002, 346: 793-801) showed that each increase of one MET in exercise capacity confers a 12% increase in longevity, and that exercise capacity in METs is a stronger predictor of mortality than other established risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

I hate counting calories. Can I still get results with Met One?
The balance of calories that you eat and calories that you burn each day certainly matters. However, Met One doesn’t focus on measuring foods and portion sizes. We start by recommending healthful changes that you can make in your diet, adding good foods and eliminating junk. Not only do the recommendations help you re-adjust your calorie intake, they will help you change your brain chemistry.

My brain chemistry? That sounds scary. What will that do?

Virtually everything we eat affects our brain chemistry. You can use that information to make subtle changes that will help you satisfy your appetite without overeating, change your food preferences toward more healthful foods, and even eliminate cravings that can sabotage your efforts at weight loss. This isn’t mind control; it’s a scientific adjustment that allows the natural properties of foods to work for, rather than against, you. As you start to feel more alert and energetic, the changes become even easier, and you won’t miss the junk foods that might have gotten in your way in the past.

I’ve never been athletic. How can I train like an athlete?
Training like an athlete doesn’t mean pushing hard every session. It refers to training with purpose. An athlete follows a program that is geared to a goal, and each workout forms the basis of the next one. The athlete pays attention to what he/she is doing, rather than watching the news or reading a magazine. Studies show that focusing on your workout will yield superior results to simply exercising while distracted.

In addition, you’ll have “performance markers”–measures of your athletic progress–to help you stay on track and remain motivated. Since performance markers typically improve faster and more consistently than weight loss, they can help “tie” you to your new health habits. The combination is powerful and effective.

Met One has everything you need to succeed: leading edge training techniques, personalized and expert coaching, safe and effective nutrition guidelines based on real food, group and individual counseling in nutrition and behavioral issues, medical oversight, support, fun, and excitement–all designed to get you RESULTS.
